Art & Wine / Lena Ekberg

Lena Ekberg is a Creative Director and sommelier, focusing on the world of wine also as an artist.

Through her art, Lena aims to tell the stories of wine’s origins in yet another way. Her paintings serve as decorative objects for interiors rather than traditional fine art. Each piece comes with a background story, offering inspiration and a deeper understanding of the world of quality wine and artisanal, sustainable work.

TERROIR / THE ART CONCEPT

It’s a sense of place that define handcrafted, exceptional wines. For artisanal winemakers, conveying a wine’s origin is essential, and terroir — the combination of soil, climate, tradition, and more — tells that distinctive story. In Lena Ekberg’s work, terroir becomes the inspiration for abstract art, interpreting the character of different wine regions, soils, places, and styles. Each painting has its own wine story, for decorative appeal and a deeper connection to the honest world of wine.

Layers

From heaven to vineyard soil. Distinct layers of topsoil and subsoil, such as limestone, sandstone, chalk, clay or sandy loam, make up the exact soil profile that contributes to wine traits of minerality and structure.

Forest Floor

Black grapes, notes of forest floor and glimmering gold in the glass. Different expressions depending on vineyard site, conditions, winemaking, and age. At times, complex red wines can reveal wonderful notes of forest floor. Dark and deep wine nuances – such as those from the Côte d’Or in Burgundy – are echoed in this painting of deep soils, earth and minerality.

Chalk Meets Clay in Champagne

Côte des Bar is perhaps the most interesting district in Champagne today, situated to the southeast, halfway to Chablis. The landscape and soils are different here. The well-known chalk soils of central Champagne meet a clay-rich soil type known as Kimmeridgian. The attitude is different too, more laid back, with a greater sense of space and artisanal vibes. The district accounts for a quarter of Champagne’s total vineyard area, and pinot noir is the dominant grape. Where chalk meets clay is where it’s happening.

Sand, Silt and Clay

From fine to even finer. Soils transition from sand to silt and then to clay. Clay soils are beneficial in hot, dry regions, as they have a high capacity to retain water. Clay also provides nutrients and cool, consistent temperatures for vine roots. In warmer vineyards this slows down maturation and promotes acidity. Some well-known examples include Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and Vosne-Romanée. Roots in clay can be ideal.

Mallorcan Soils

A special type of sandstone, marès, is found throughout Mallorca. It formes the basis of beautiful walls, buildings, and architectural details. It’s also the component of the soils that are home to local grape varieties, such as callet, mantonegro, gorgollassa, giró ros and others. Marès stone is porous and contributes to good drainage. The most common vineyard soil is called vermell, a mix of clay, limestone, and iron oxide. The overall impression of Mallorcan soils is a warm beige – a lovely backdrop for fantastic Mallorcan wines.

Golden Earth

Ask any grower or winemaker of quality, handcrafted wines, and the answer will be the same: a good wine is made in the vineyard, and it all starts with the soil – living, rich, and structured. The right type of soil is pure gold, to be preserved using sustainable methods. Old vineyards are treasures to care for, while young ones should be planted with a vision to grow old for future generations. The focus is golden earth.

Volcanic Soils

Some very interesting vineyard sites have soils composed largely of volcanic ash and lava, either in high concentrations or mixed in smaller amounts. Around still-active volcanoes, such as Etna on Siciliy and the volcanoes of the Canary Islands, the soils are almost black or dark grey, and the high degree of volcanic material lends a distinctive minerality to the wines. On the slopes of Etna, grapes grow at favourably high altitudes and send their roots deep in the poor ground, struggling, and at the same time, achieving high quality through a tough excistence. The Etna DOC appellation is home to many wonderful red and white wines with structure and complexity. The village of Passopisciaro, on Etna’s northern side, is a good base for winery excursions in this beautiful area.

Nerello Mascalese

Sicily’s and Etna’s black grape, nerello mascalese, is truly exceptional. Grown in different contrade (vineyard sites) it can produce high-quality wines with varied expressions. Versante Nord, the northern slope, is the preferred location. The old vines grow deep, absorbing all the mineral traits that the poor soils provide. A beautiful birthplace of remarkable wines.
